We zullen zien...

Our first square foot garden container has been waiting in our garden for some time now. In the meantime we were busy: the 3 other containers are finished as well! Even better: we managed to fill two of those containers with self made potting soil, based on the guides of Velt. We did a more complex composition, based on the soil out of our garden mixed with cocopeat, compost, sand, lava and bentonite.
I can tell you one thing: it's a hell of a job to mix 500 liters of soil, twice! (and two more to go...). But it worked! And I'm so happy our strawberry plants finally moved to the new location. In the meantime they're there long enough so I can tell you they feel really good on their new spot.
In the 12 outer squares I planted our mara des bois strawberry plants. In the four middle ones there's the regular strawberries, but I've no idea what kind they are...

In the second container I planted corn, zucchini and beans.
Now I can hear you thinking: "Corn in a container?! Zucchini in a container?! Corn AND zucchini in a container?!" Well, according to the book groenten kweken op een vierkante meter by Hubert Fontaine, it is possible. Since I've got 4 containers (and I started late this year), that gives me plenty of room to give it a try. Besides: you can plant the zucchini a bit on the side of the container and let it grow over the edges. The corn will grow tall as well, but this plant will reach a lot of height instead of the width of de zucchini plant. I'll probably need a ladder to harvest... We'll just see how it will go. I just thought now is the time to experiment.
I also planted a row of bean plants.

For those who wonder how much a project like this costs: there are a lot of different types of square foot gardens, so the costs vary. Just pay attention to the durability: some containers on the market are made of thin wood, I think you'll have to toss them after a few years. The use of regular potting soil isn't sustainable either: there's a lot of peat in it, and the peat is exhausted! So it's better to use potting soil with cocopeat (Ecostyle).
Also, pay attention that regular potting soil only has "food" for about 6 to 8 weeks. You'll have to replace the soil every year, unless you make your own composition. That way, you'll have to add compost every year.

Our project costs about 80 to 90 euro per container:
  • second choice douglas wood, given a second life, bought via houtenplaten.be. We used two pallets per container (you'll have some leftovers, but think of the nice projects you can do with those!). Our containers measure (inside) 120 x 120 x 36 cm. The wood is 4,5 cm thick, so they'll probably last long! (and the sides are wide enough to sit on while you garden)
  • About 70 euro for the soil (500 liter). You'll need old compost, which we got from my father-in-law since it's hard to find old compost anyhwere. We got it for free, and so was, offcourse, the soil from our garden.
