Het ondergoedproject: de bh-avonturen / the underwear project: the bra-adventures

In één richting:
Heen.

the back - you can see how the straps are too close to each other,
and on the left lower seam you can see some tape leftovers...

Let's be honest: I blame it all on the wrong fabric.
I used this fabric for a dress about 7 years ago. Now that I'm working with it again, it all comes back: not a nice one to work with!
I especially chose a knit for the stretching abilities. And this fabric stretches all right. In one direction:
Back.
Not forth.

So I had to do my trick with the tape again. By putting tape on the sewing area before you stitch, the fabric doesn't get stretched too much under your machine. I must say that it is a hell of a job to remove it afterwards...

But when I was sewing the elastics on the band, it showed once more: the fabric doesn't come back after stitching. So I had to shorten the band by several cm. That's why the point where the shoulder straps are attached to the back band are in an awkward position. To make it less obvious, I crossed the shoulder straps. Now it's not that bothering that they are so close together.

And when I tried to sew the neckline seam with the double needle, my sewing machine kept jamming. That's when I started finishing things up by hand.

And now about the cups. I told you last time about that tutorial to draw your own bra pattern. I learned a lot from it, but it needs to be said: the cups look rather bad. I wouldn't be surprised if Madonna's clothes designers used this pattern as an inspiration.
So I took one of my own bra's and drew the cups, with a seam from left to right over the cup. Eventually that turned out quite nice, because the new cups fitted perfectly into the already drafted and cut out band.

A short evaluation:

  • the elastics and garments: really good, except the little rings for the shoulder straps. They were too wide for the straps.
  • The pattern of the tutorial I followed. Came in real handy for everything but the cups. Unless you like to have a pointed boob effect.
  • All imperfections are due to the fabric. If I make another one, I won't be able to say that anymore... :-s
  • It fits nicely, so it's not a bad first attempt. I know there are more elegant bra's but I wasn't expecting too much from my first bra with scraps of fabric.
I'll at least try to make another bra, but then I'll be more careful when I pick the fabric. Although I'll still take it out of my hughe stash, so hopefully there's something good in there...

Next: the undies. I found them again (in the clean laundry, hooray!). I also made a pattern of it already.
