DIY zandstraalfolie / etching foil
Onze voordeur (die aan de zijkant van het huis staat) heeft nogal wat inkijk tot in de living. In het verleden hing er een gordijn tussen de inkomhal en de living, enerzijds voor de warmte, anderzijds om te veel inkijk te vermijden. Ik wou er geen deur, omdat dat teveel licht zou wegnemen. Maar dat gordijn neemt natuurlijk evenveel licht weg, dus had ik dit jaar echt geen zin om dat terug dicht te doen. Daarbij gaan we nog een kleine verwarming in de inkomhal hangen, waardoor de warmte van de living minder zin heeft om naar daar te trekken.
Toen we aan onze badkamer bezig waren, kocht ik zandstraalfolie om eventuele inkijk in de badkamer te vermijden, en daar hadden we nog wat restjes van. Ik vond het zonde om nog folie bij te kopen (want zo blijf je restjes opstapelen) dus maakte ik een ontwerpje dat past op ons raam, én dat past op de restjes zandstraalfolie die we nog hadden (twee smalle en één groter stuk).
Ik wou er een motief op, maar durfde het ook niet te complex te maken.
Ik maakte een ontwerp op de computer, printte het op ware grootte, en legde het onder de zandstaalfolie. Je kon er nog genoeg door zien om het patroon (met potlood) over te nemen op de folie.
Kuis het raam. Of toch die delen waar de folie gaat komen.
Het moeilijkste: breng de folie aan. (plakband om de plaatsing te markeren en een waterpas om zeker te zijn dat het recht hangt, zijn geen overbodige luxe - een lat of iets dergelijks om grotere delen in één keer glad te strijken is ook handig)
Neem een breekmes en snij (niet te hard, niet te zacht) op de lijntjes.
Haal de delen weg die weggehaald moeten worden.
Tips: kleef je folie vast aan je patroon, maar doe dat best met afplaktape. Gewone plakband geeft toch nog lijmresten.

The front door of our house (which is actually on the side) has some see-through to the living room. In the past I just hung a curtain between the hall way and the living room, to keep the warmth inside and curious looks out. I didn't want a door because it would take away too much light. But the curtain does just that: it takes away all the light. So this year I decided not to close it again. Besides, we're about to hang extra heating in the hall way, so the warmth from the living room wouldn't have to move there...
When we were working on our bathroom, I bought etching foil to ensure some privacy in our bathroom. We had some leftovers. I thought it was a shame to buy extra bits for the front door (that way you just keep having left overs) so I made a design that fits the front door and the leftover pieces (2 small and 1 bigger piece).
I wanted a pattern on it, but I didn't dare to make a complex drawing.
I made a computer design, printed it at true size, put the foil on top. The foil was transparent enough to get the pattern traced with a pencil.
Clean your window. Or at least those parts where the foil has to go.
The hardest part: sticking the foil to the window. Tape to mark the position and a level to make sure it's straight are a must - something to get it all smooth, like a ruler, might come in handy as well)
Take an x-acto knife, cut on the lines (don't press too hard, but not too soft)
Remove the parts that need to be removed.
Tip: tape your foil to your pattern while tracing, but do this with tape you use for painting jobs. Regular tape has too much glue residue.
